On board the latest Lomprayah catamaran from Mae Haad to Chumporn. This particular catamaran has a passenger capacity of circa. 380 persons and a top speed that must approach 30 knots, although we did not travel at that speed on this trip. Koh Tao has changed dramatically over the last 10 years and unfortunately parts of the island resemble any Mediterranean tourist resort. Nevertheless, it is still possible to find solitude and quiet - mainly on the Eastern side of the island where one can still walk through the forests. Of course, it is scuba diving instruction that is the attraction for visitors, from entry stages to professional status and increasingly technical diving, as more wrecks are discovered in the Gulf of Thailand (usually located at the 55 - 85 metre depth range). There are probably 40 different dive schools in all, serving all the range of requirements. While the actual diving may not be the best in Thailand, one has probably the greatest concentration of teaching expertise here. Also, for those wishing to become a Dive Master of Dive Instructor, courses are excellent. Getting to Koh Tao from Bangkok is now easy - if somewhat tedious, with regular bus-ferry services from three companies and for those with the pocket, travel from Bangkok can be arranged by flying first to Koh Samui. It still retains a charm but I am afraid that the view of the sea from the foot path on Sairee Beach is soon to be closed by the sheer wall of buildings that have gone up.
